My family and I discovered these cupcakes a few years ago. They quickly became the most requested treat in the house. We order them for every birthday, special occasion, corporate event, or even just a random Wednesday. Once you taste one of these treats, you think about them for days and days until you are able to have it again. We CRAVE them! I have never seen my family have so much enthusiasm over a dessert.
Imagine our surprise when we found out these cupcakes are GLUTEN FREE!!! Before having this knowledge, you couldn't have paid my family enough to even sample a GF dessert. We assumed that meant taste free, texture free, and fun free. These cupcakes have certainly changed our minds. Highly recommend!!
These were by far the BEST cupcakes I have ever had! We've ordered almond, red velvet, chocolate and carrot cake cupcakes and while they are all amazing, the almond is my favorite. While we don't have a sensitivity to gluten, these are all gluten free but you wouldn't ever know. Do yourself a favor and try anything that comes from this bakery - you won't be disappointed!
Awkward Amabell provided the cupcakes and smash cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday party. Rachael and Sydney were both awesome to work with from the start—answering all of my questions and accommodating my many requests!! They were able to make not only gluten free cupcakes, but also provided vegan cupcakes too! Rachael designed the cupcakes and smash cake using the party invitation for reference—she was spot on! I also requested a sugar free and egg free cake for my daughter, and Rachael made the most delicious apple spice cake with cream cheese icing and all natural food coloring—my daughter dug in and we were able to capture all of those messy 1st birthday pictures that every parent wants! Friends and family are still raving about how these were the best cupcakes they have ever had (not to mention, no one even realized they were gf or vegan)!! Thank you Awkward Amabell for creating such delicious and beautiful desserts to make this day so special!

Sydney Pack
Owner/Head Baker
Awkward Amabell is a Gluten Free friendly bakery. The head baker and owner, Sydney, has experimented with gluten free baked goods on and off for the last decade. Sydney is a self-taught baker, yet learned from the help of her grandmother's. She was taught how to bake in the south, but has found Pittsburgh to have even more amazing baked items to learn how to make. Sydney is thrilled to live in Pittsburgh and learn about the different culturally inspired baked goods. She has a background in business and manages the full bakery business.
The naming process was long. It's a strange name yes, but it has lots of meaning. It's extremely awkward having conversations at parties and restaurants when you have a food/gluten allergy, especially for an awkward social-anxiety-ridden introvert... hence, Awkward. As for Amabell, Sydney is of Scottish decent (her maiden name is Ross), but the truth is that both of the original co-owners just have an Awkward fondness for shaggy Highland cows, thus becoming their mascot known as Amabell. Which is also the street on Mt. Washington (note: we are located in Franklin Park).
